Title
North Korea’s Breach of Disarmament
Summary
The current difficulties of maintaining security in North Korea has developed into eminent issue recently, as the state has new intentions of reactivating the Yongbyon nuclear complex. Despite the initial efforts of Pyongyang to dismantle the reactor during the past year, they have gone back on their word for disarmament, and demonstrated their commitment symbolically, by blowing up the main cooling tower at Yongbyon.
A spokeswoman for the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that seals and cameras at the site were removed completely earlier this week. In addition to surveillance removal, the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency will no longer have any access to the reprocessing of the plant. The conflict is an international one, being that North Korea was on the United States’ list of state sponsors of terrorism. North Korea’s backing out of the disarmament deal only makes matters worse. The members of the original deal included North and South Korea, Japan, China, Russia, and the United States of America. Experts have stated it will take almost a year to get the plant back up and running but the plutonium production of the plant could be as high as 6kg within two months of being in commission.
Analysis
The issue of ensuring national security is prevalent in North Korea’s digression from nuclear disarmament for North Korea as well as the United States. The tactics by Pyongyang were enacted to address what North Korea perceives to be a national security dilemma for the state. This attempt at securing that the general welfare of the citizens of North Korea remains formidable re-induces the notion for other nations in the world that North Korea is a major threat. North Korea’s motive for reprocessing the Yongbyon plant was said to be defensive, and an evident display of their uncertainty that other states in the United Nations like the United States will not retain on their task of the disarmament pact. The United States has diligently been trying to persuade North Korea to reconsider their intentions to further the reopening of Yongbyon, but Pyongyang continues its transition back into producing plutonium and nuclear weapons.
North Korea is in a vulnerable state right now and is acting in a defensive manner in order to manage their security conflict. The United States, as part of the deal of the disarmament pact was supposed to remove Pyongyang from the terrorist list was an element as to why North Korea back out. However, this defensive pretext, in the minds of the United States, may be used to produce nuclear warheads, which is a chief concern of theirs. This matter evidently, will be pivotal on an international scale as the struggle for power and security ensues. The threat of war between North Korea and the United States only seems more likely to occur in the future with this latest matter.
The state of North Korea is also at conflict in terms of centralized power, with the recent illness of Kim Jung-il. Reports were made that after the stroke of Kim Jong-il; the fragility of his health is being advantageously used to nullify the deal, while others argue that the restart of its nuclear reactor was meant to put pressure on the U.S. to remove the North from the terrorist list. The reactor is capable of making weapons-grade plutonium, which poses an international threat to many states internationally. Much of the United States’ and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s recent alarm over North Korea’s rearmament results from the uncertainty of Kim Jung-il’s health. North Korea has resorted to resisting using diplomatic tactics to more independent and self-reliant methods to ensure power and security of the state. North Korea poses a serious threat internationally after their current breach of the disarmament pact.
