| |

Analysis |
Russia is attempting to increase its influence within the Latin American sphere by increasing its ties with a influential country in the area. Both Russia and Venezuela have co-operated closely in the defense and energy spheres. However, Medvedev is looking to increase Russia’s influence in what has traditionally been considered America’s backyard.
This attempt marks a re-assertion of Russia’s attempts to counteract America’s influence. Both Venezuela and Russia have been highly critical of US foreign policy in recent years, and Medvedev has “echoed his predecessor” in calls for the creation of “a multipolar world.” The aim is at reducing America’s geo-political advantage as the most powerful nation on the planet.
