Title |
PKK frees Turkish soldiers
| |
Summary |
The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), in a cross-border raid on Turkey last month, captured eight Turkish soldiers and killed twelve others. But after the threat of being chased and killed by Iraqi troops, the 8 were released. The main focus of the story should be the commitment by Iraq to aide Turkey in their fight against these rebels.

Analysis |
This is all good for us, because it essentially means we don’t have to do anything except sit and watch. Originally, when it looked like Iraq wouldn’t help Turkey, there was some speculation and rumors that the US would need to step up and kick the PKK out of Iraq. Also, it means that there is less of a reason for Turkey to take its 100,000 troops across the border to deal with 3,000 rebels; instead, Iraq is proving it can maintain security for itself and other states by moving against the PKK, which is good because if Iraq proves that it can take care of itself, there is no more reason for us to be there.
However, we need to be vigilant, because if Turkey moves its troops into Iraq, it could spark some controversy between the two countries because the whol reason Iraq is aiding them is so they don’t come into the country.
