Title
Election in the DRC Brings Unrest
Summary
Election-related violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed at least 18 civilians between November 26 and 28. President Joseph Kabila is running for re-election against 10 challengers. A preliminary European Union report says election observers saw ballot box stuffing and ballot shortages, and that some people were turned away from the polls.
Analysis
The killings have come from DRC security forces because of the mass uprising during the election process. During the campaign, deadly clashes between state police and opposition supporters have accrued. Most of the tension has come from President Kabila’s supports and his main opponent Etienne Tshisekedi. President Kabila took the presidency after the death of his father in 2001. Analysts from the EU and African Union are concerned that there could be further bloodshed when the election results are announced which is scheduled for next Tuesday. The Human Rights Watch report blamed most of the deaths on Kabila’s Republican Guard
