Analysis |
Egyptians have recognized that the military currently holds all the power and it is in their interest to protect that as reflected in the document the SCAF recently released. Therefore, they are protesting and rightfully so. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces or SCAF even still held a massive amount of power when Hosni Mubarak, former president and army commander, was still in power, but with him gone they have no one to contest their hegemony. Although, this does not mean they will hold power, especially if the protesters keep reacting so strongly. Another indicator of just how popular the unrest is, is that the protest drew people of different ideologies and persuasions together; because the Egyptian populace is that galvanized over the issue, it does not look like they will stop with ousting Mubarak, they want fair and honest elections. They want to choose their own president. This bodes well for the power of the most organized and popular parties in Egypt, namely the Muslim Brotherhood, among others. | |
