Analysis |
Kuwait is a key American ally in the region and one of the Middle East’s largest oil exporters. The United States fought a war in 1991 to keep Iraq from invading Kuwait. Kuwait has been one of the countries that has not seen large scale protest that have been a part of the Arab Spring in the region, which has ousted leaders in Egypt, Libya, and several other countries. Having been ruled by the Sabah royal family since 1752, Kuwait still, however, has an elected parliament that has an opposition party. This opposition party, who helped start the protest, has been calling for the resignation of the prime minister citing that prime minister misused public funds. This could be the next state to experience the effects of the Arab Spring.
