Title
North Korea Nuclear Move
Summary
On September 24th the U.N’s atomic watchdog reported it had removed seals and surveillance cameras from part of the Yongbyon plant at North Korea’s request.
North Korea had said it planned to restart nuclear activities because the U.S had failed to fulfill its part of a deal to remove Pyongyang from its terrorist blacklist.
The U.N nuclear inspectors have been expelled from a very dangerous part of the Yongbyon facility, the reprocessing plant, which is used to make weapons-grade plutonium. Although the U.S says that talks of denuclearization are not “dead”, this definitely puts added pressure on the situation
Analysis
There has been high tensions between North Korea and The United States, who have marked North Korea on their list of “state sponsors of terrorism” back in April.
The U.S has been fighting to gain power globally against terrorist organizations, and those states that have any connection with these groups. Earlier this spring, The U.S accused North Korea of helping Syria build a nuclear reactor, which did not have peaceful intentions, thus landing North Korea a spot on the list.
Since the United States is being backed by South Korea, China, Russia and Japan, the North had decided to cooperate with the UN, as a way of avoiding conflict and being overpowered by these nations. Although North Korea had been taking steps toward denuclearization, such as handing over accounts of its nuclear program, as well as demolishing its cooling tower at its Yongbyon nuclear reactor, things changed drastically this past week.
North Korea, tired of being controlled by the U.S and not seeing any benefits from their actions, decided to try and take back power from the U.S, by expelling all UN inspectors and monitoring systems from their plants. Since North Korea will now be able to do more or less whatever they please, and do so without any monitoring they know that they technically have the power. The U.S, or any other nation will have no way of really knowing what their nuclear ambitions are without UN inspectors, thus putting these important negotiations at a stand-still.
In this situation we see the United States wanting to stay firm on their War on Terror, as well as making sure that weapons of mass destruction are kept in check, while North Korea wants to be able to experiment and raise arms without the intervention of the UN or being labeled terrorists by the U.S. This struggle for international power and for personal security is what caused the situation to become greatly unstable.
