Title
Iran’s Defense Causes Stir
Summary
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran was in the process of developing a nuclear device until last year; however there are no credible sources saying that Tehran has ended the program and they could still potentially be working on the device. This report caused Israel to say they may strike Tehran because of previous tensions between Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israel. Iran defended by threatening that any attacks “would be met by ‘iron fists’” since the reason for the nuclear program is for research and not conflicts, or so they say.
Analysis
Israel has claimed that for years Iran has been working on making nuclear devices, but this is the first time Israel has been taken seriously and only with the help of the IAEA’s report. Iran threateningly responded in order to defend their supposed true purposes for the program. From the realist perspective, this situation is about power through safety and protection. Iran is getting more atomic capabilities to be able to compete with other prominent nations in the world, but Israel is fearful of getting attacked. Israel is backed by the U.S. and other “key states” such as Russia and China are potentially going to back Israel if they place more sanctions on Tehran and let up their resistance in the United Nations Security Council. The IAEA’s report on Iran revealed insights that could threaten world peace because the states that have nuclear power would not want opposition states like Iran to have the same nuclear capabilities.
