Poverty Increases in Russia
Summary
The State Statistics Service confirmed that poverty in Russia has increased by more than two million in the past year. Of Russia’s 21.1 million person population, about 15 percent is below poverty.
Analysis
In 2001 the State Statistics Service acknowledged that the population then was around 50 million, and 33 percent of Russians were below poverty. By 2005 the percentage had lowered to 24.5 percent, and in 2007 the percentage had improved to 14.8 living in poverty. Although currently Russia’s poverty is increased, Forbes magazine wrote that Russia has 101 billionaires, which is the double it was in 2010. In fact Moscow has more of the world’s wealthiest people than New York. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin stated that the taxes on the rich could be raised, because he understands the importance of changing the poverty levels.
