Sri Lanka’s navy says during a routine patrol near the fishing port of Nachchikuda in north-western Sri Lanka they were attacked by Tamil rebels. During this battle the navy sank seven small and three medium rebel boats and killing at least 25 rebels. There has been no word from the side of the rebels on their account of the battle. The battle also sparked awareness of the Sri Lankan policy requiring people arriving in the western province, mostly people displaced because of the war, they are mostly Tamil people.

Analysis |
After Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948 the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamil Communities within Sri Lanka have been strained, causing several riots. The Tamils soon formed militant groups to promote the independence for Tamils now called The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The civil war between the two communities is causing a strain of power within the state. The Sri Lankan Government is trying to reestablish their dominance and control over the whole state while the Tamil people want a separate Tamil state.
The Tamil rebels are determined to show that although the Tamil people are in the minority within the state making them the weaker opponents as opposed to the Sri Lankan military. The war appears to be an unequal match, but the Tamil have been proving themselves over and over because the civil war has yet to end. With only Tamil are using the boats and aircrafts (actual air strike) to aid the rebellion and desire to become an independent separate of Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan government finds the Tamil rebels to be a serious threat to Sri Lankan security to their citizens as well as the Sri Lankan authority over the entire state. The Sri Lankan government wants complete control over the state and the Tamil rebels are preventing that. The Sri Lankan government is attempting to obliterate the The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. This Thursday the Sri Lanka’s military seven small Tamil Tiger boats and three larger craft were destroyed and at least 25 rebels were killed. Sri Lanka has shown their strength here as well as controlling and identifying the people in their region by requiring them to register at a police station. Most of these displaced people are from the Tamil community showing their control over the region. It has been estimated the death toll from this civil war is 70,000, a number that will most likely increase until the balance of power is restored. | |
