Title |
Boycott by the Muslim Brotherhood
| |
Summary |
Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement announced it and dozens of other parties will boycott the legislative elections if no changes in parliamentary law were made. The democratic coalition which includes the Justice and Freedom Party established some conditions for the elections which abolished the candidacy system. The changes the Muslim Brotherhood is proposing would ban former members of the National Democratic Party from participating in politics for ten years.

Analysis |
The Muslim Brotherhood and the Justice and Freedom Party must learn how to share power and cooperate in the newly liberated Egypt. The consequences of a stalled government that is already under military control would be catastrophic for the region. A dangerous power vacuum could ensue or a governmental shutdown which would leave an even greater amount of governing power in the already strong military. Democracy must prevail for Egypt and the surrounding area to take steps towards security.
