Title
Pope Benedict XVI is Challenged for Reform by Germany
Summary
Pope Benedict XVI is challenged to reform the Catholic Church by Germany. Many Germans are gradually losing faith in the church and its traditionalist ideals. Scandals and tension have aided in over 100,000 Germans leaving the church.
Analysis
In an attempt to salvage what is left of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI is pressured to address concerns with German Catholics about homosexuality and women in the priesthood. Vatican traditionalists have been the main forerunners in pressuring the Pope. There is also another growing issue the Pope is faced with, such as clerical scandals shaking Germany, as well as throughout Europe. Thus, approximately 181,000 Germans have left the church in the past year, decreasing the power and effectiveness of the Roman Catholic Church. It is estimated in Germany that approximately 2,000 were either mistreated or sexually manipulated by a priest. Therefore, many Germans are seeking for reform of the Catholic Church. With all of these issues arising, it leaves no choice but for the Pope to take action soon. It seems clear that reform is the best option, if the Pope seeks to sustain the power of the Roman Catholic Church.
