Title
UN Press Confrence- Palestine’s Statehood
Summary
On September 22, more than thirty diplomats walked out during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s UN speech that criticized the killing of Osama Bin Laden and questioned the Holocaust. Israel rejected the speech before it began, and later used the speech as ammunition towards the Iranian President. This speech comes a day before the Palestinian bid for UN membership, which Iran fully supports. Countries against the Palestinian bid include Israel and The United States, both of which spoke at the UN press conference. President Ahmadinejad’s speech expressed many of his concerns, including the United States’ reasoning behind not questioning Osama Bin Laden about the September 11 attack before assassinating him. He suggested that The United States had not questioned Bin Laden’s methods of maneuvering around the US’s security, because his killing was actually a cover-up by the US for the 9/11 attack. UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech criticized Ahmadinejad’s mistreatment of the people of Iran, including their prevention of public demonstrations and denial of access to free media. Iran also spoke of its support of Palestine’s bid for UN membership.
Analysis
Although the people of Palestine are predominantly Sunni Muslim, Arab, and speak mainly Arabic, Iran, who’s people are Shia Muslim, non-Arab, and speak mainly Farsi, is an open supporter of Palestine. Perhaps Iran’s support for Palestine comes from the fact that both are mutual enemies of Israel, Iran wants to appease the anti-Zionists by working against Israel, and/or because Iran believes that the distraction of supporting Palestine’s cause is helping to gain-back the unification and support of the Iranian people, after their earlier attempt at a revolution. Obama’s vow to veto Palestine’s bid seems to contradict his earlier vow to Palestine to support its statehood. Obama suggests that Palestine and Israel work out the dispute diplomatically and through compromise. He sees the UN bid as a “short cut” and not a clear resolution. Although many would hope for peaceful compromise between the two nations, Iran’s declaration of support for Palestine coupled with its provoking statements towards Israel and The Unites States suggests that Iran and other Palestinian supporters are preparing for an all-out war if Palestine does not earn its statehood through this UN bid. Only time will tell if diplomacy is in Palestine’s future.
