Title |
Strain on U.S.-China Relations
| |
Summary |
Relations between the United States and China are under further tension as a result of The United States sending over 5 billion dollars to help upgrade Taiwan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet. China has come right out and asked the United States to stop this assistance as it is damaging China’s plan of reunification with Taiwan, a country they see as a breakaway, and is also straining Chinese-U.S. relations. Similar events took place last year when China became distraught over an arms deal between the United States and Taiwan.

Analysis |
The situation between Taiwan and China is a sensitive one. China views Taiwan as a breakaway territory and Taiwan views themselves as their own country. Throw in the United States giving money to fund parts of Taiwan’s military and defense force and you have a troubling mix. United States and China are close economic allies and recurring events such as this only seek to tear away at the economic partnership that is important to both countries. The United States needs to determine if funding Taiwan is more important that its economic ties with China.
