Title
Iran’s Nuclear Power Plant Goes on the Grid
Summary
Iran’s first nuclear power plant has just recently been connected to the power grid in Iran. This isn’t a new project however. This particular power plant, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, was started back in the 1970’s but the project was abandoned after the Islamic revolution and wasn’t resumed until Iran was able to conclude a deal with Russia in the 1990’s to finish construction. On September 12, 2011, it was operating at forty percent capacity.
Analysis
While Iran says its intentions are nothing but peaceful, but this has done nothing to quell any concerns from the western powers. For some time, the western powers have been trying to stall Iran’s nuclear program so as to not cause even more problems in the Middle East. They even tried to get Russia to withdraw its funding and manpower from the project. The International Atomic Energy Agency has even expressed concern over the issue that Iran could be secretly working on a nuclear weapons program. This event will probably lead to even more tensions in the region.
