Title
Libya’s new leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil’s first public speech
Summary
Libya’s new leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, replacing Gaddafi, made his first public speech on Tuesday September 13th. His speech was met with much praise from the crowd. The audience was numbered in the thousands, which was clearly noticeable when Abdul-Jalil would often have to pause due to loud applause from the crowd.
Analysis
During the speech an atmosphere of much hope existed, which surely came as relief to many of the citizens of Libya. How long can this optimism last though? The speech given main purpose was to satisfy the people, but not much actual relief came from it. The only issue actually stated in the speech was that an allowance would be given to the unemployed, which is good news, considering this is something Libya has needed and wanted for sometime, considering their high unemployment. Other issues though were not handled, such as education, health care and job creation. Another issue still barely touched is what type of government Libya will move to. The problem is that with Libyan rebels still at war with Gaddafi loyalists none of this can actually be decided. Another issue is that there are a few different and powerful groups of rebels, which once the war is resolved could quickly become a power struggle, which is what Libya needs to avoid in order to obtain peace.
