Title
Former Thai Prime Minister Set to Face New Charges
Summary
Former Thai PM, Thaksin Shinawatra, is set to face new charges concerning abuse of power. In 2004 while still in office, Thaksin ordered a state owned bank to loan the Burmese government 30 million dollars. Burma used this loan to further develop its telecommunications program to benefit Thaksin’s family owned Shin Corporation. Thaksin is currently facing other charges concerning abuse of power though he has not been found guilty on any charges to date.
Analysis
Thaksin’s loan of 30 million dollars (USD) served several purposes on both a personal and state level. First, this loan was self interested. The fact that his family owns Shin Corporation, which was to benefit largely from the telecommunications development program in Burma, meant a huge personal benefit at the Thai government’s expense.
On the state level this loan in and of itself would mean increased influence of the Thai government in Burmese affairs because Burma is now 30 million dollars in debt to Thailand. This increased influence or power likewise affects Thailand’s control in the region. Having Burma indebt to Thailand would mean increased support and cooperation from the Burmese state if Thailand were in need. With internal conflicts in Burma and shared Thai Burmese boarders this increased Thai influence would also serve as a security measure. Should internal conflict spill over the border, Thailand would now have greater influence and control within the Burmese government to quickly put a stop to border conflicts.
The fact that Thailand is adding on these charges to Thaksin’s list of offenses is a sign that the new government is desperately trying to regain control within its own government. Thaksin’s conviction on one or more of these abuse charges would serve to delegitimize Thaksin’s government and in turn to give legitimacy to Thaksin’s former opposition. This legitimacy would aim to gain the support of Thais. The support of the people would then give the internal Thai government the power, the control, and the security to operate without the threat of a coup hanging overhead.
