Title
Addressing Zimbabwe’s Cholera Epidemic
Summary
On Thursday, Zimbabwe declared a state of emergency in response to the cholera epidemic that has claimed over 500 lives. Since August, a failing health system, suffering economy, and ongoing political disputes over President Mugabe have stood in the way of substantial response to the cholera crisis. The government is seeking aid from the international community. So far, and despite significant opposition to Zimbabwe’s president, Britain and the European Commission have pledged millions of dollars in aid to help the state. In addition, the International Red Cross sent additional supplies to support the fight to end the epidemic.
Analysis
International support is crucial to helping end the spread of cholera in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s appeal for external donors demonstrates the state’s understanding of the importance of communication and good relations between states. South Africa and Botswana recognize the severity of the epidemic and the need to intervene. Zimbabwe borders these states and, as such, interdependence is likely to ensure peace along border lines.
In addition, Britain and Botswana have expressed their desire to help and have encouraged other states to contribute as well, in an effort to promote human security---donations will support water treatment plans and pay for food for citizens. Actions from international organizations such as the International Red Cross illustrate commitment to the global community and a desire for absolute gains. Increased support and funding will help Zimbabwe rebuild its economy and continue developing to become more developed on the international stage.
