Title
Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan begin talks to improve cooperation
Summary
The Turkish government is holding high level official talks between the Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardali, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Istanbul, Turkey beginning late Thursday and carrying on through Friday. The talks are centered around drug trade, counter-terrorism, security training, and joint economic development plans between the three states in an effort to bring the three states closer together. It is also designed to have Karzai and Zardali engage in dialogue with each other as the two neighboring states are currently maintaining cold relations.
Analysis
These talks are an excellent way for these three states to begin working together as well as bringing greater stability to the region. Afghanistan and Pakistan are experiencing strained ties as both states are dealing with insurgencies along the border regions and have been unable to cooperate and agree on an efficient plan to remove the insurgents which has continued to heighten tensions. These talks, although not intended to directly confront these issues in particular, will force the two leaders to communicate with each other.
The Turkish effort to engage and work with Afghanistan and Pakistan is very beneficial for all members as each state has much to gain from the resources of each other as well as greater stability which will result from closer cooperation. Pakistan can use the closer ties with Afghanistan and Turkey as Pakistan is currently experiencing greater international pressure after the recent terrorist attack in India which is suspected to have originated in Pakistan. Pakistan’s willingness to work with other states in the region will improve the ties with the other major states in the region, particularly Turkey. Also, warming of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan will allow each state to focus more on their domestic concerns.
Turkey stands to gain much from these talks as well. Turkey has been growing more closely associated with European culture, but by amplifying economic and political relations with other Middle East states Turkey can benefit from both cultures and reciprocate to both regions the different gains it makes and ultimately interconnect Europe more closely with the Middle East.
