Mumbai Attacked
| |
Summary |
Last week, terrorists attacked two luxury hotels and other locations in Mumbai, India. A Pakistani militant group named Lashkar-e-Taiba is currently being held responsible for the terrorist attack. Since this militant group was trained in Pakistan, India is calling for Pakistan to take “strong action” against Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Analysis |
Even though the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba is supposedly not associated at all with the Pakistani government, India is taking a hard look at Pakistan to see how they will respond to the situation. It is possible that Indian troops could be sent to the Indian-Pakistani border if Pakistan does not react in a favorable way. A major conflict between India and Pakistan could be on the horizon. Since both of these states have nuclear capabilities, this is a very significant issue.
A main reason for India’s harsh look on Pakistan is because India’s domestic security has been compromised. India needs to be able to guarantee its citizens that they are safe to walk outside of their houses. By forcing Pakistan into some type of action, this allows Indian citizens to believe that the Indian government is strong enough to seek international justice.
If a conflict between India and Pakistan is initiated, then it would cause a huge blow to the US War on Terror in Afghanistan. Pakistan has stated that if India sends troops to the Indian-Pakistani border, then they will remove troops from the Afghan-Pakistani border and send them to the Indian-Pakistani border. The loss of these troops would hinder the advancements that have already been made by the United States in Afghanistan. The United States is currently trying to be a mediator between India and Pakistan.
