Title
Egyptian Court Rules Halt on Transporting Gas to Israel
Summary
An Egyptian court has ruled that all gas currently being pumped to Israel must cease. However, it is not known whether the ruling will be enforced or not, as many in the Egyptian Parliament insist the ruling should have been put through the Parliament first. Also, the Egyptian government has, on several occasions, ignored the court’s rulings in the past. The deal stated that Egypt would pump 1.7bn cubic metres to Israel a year for twenty years. This ruling is believed to be fueled by anger over the Israel blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Analysis
From a Liberal Perspective this ruling is bad for both parties involved, since it involves hurting trade relations between states. If the ruling is enforced, the Egyptians will lose money and the Israelis will lose the goods they are attempting to purchase. This ruling being enforced could also start a trend of Egypt canceling trade deals with states that don’t behave as they wish. This will lessen interdependence between states, and due to rising tensions, will be more likely to lead to war.
There are two ways to solve this issue. The first would be to open up negotiations between Israel, Egypt, and the Palestinian Territories. According to the Liberal Perspective, level-headed diplomacy between the states is more likely than threats of cutting of trade and economic ties. The other option these states have is to appeal to the United Nations. Having an institution to voice their griefs with each other makes it more likely that the states will solve their problems with a war of words rather than a war of weapons.
