Title |
Syria Encouraged to Promote Peace in the Middle East
| |
Summary |
The Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom held talks with the Syrian president in an effort to encourage the Middle Eastern country to help build comprehensive peace in the region. While the United States has remained critical of Syria’s seemingly apathetic attitude towards insurgent groups operating in the country, diplomatic contact between the United Kingdom and Syria has increased in recent months. The Foreign Minister hopes Syria can act as a positive link between the West and Iran.

Analysis |
The visit by the United Kingdom’s foreign minister indicates improving relations between members of the European Union and Syria. Diplomacy between the European Union and Syria had deteriorated after Syria’s alleged involvement in the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister in 2005. The United Kingdom, however, has understood that Syria has the potential to promote stability in the region, and has sought to bring Syria back into the international fold.
Syria has already taken limited steps in building good relations with its neighbors. The country currently participates in indirect peace negotiations with Israel, which have been supported by Turkey and the United Kingdom. The European Union hopes the visit by the foreign minister will produce agreements related to counter-terrorism in the region, nuclear proliferation, and the war in Iraq. So far, the foreign minister has been pleased with Syria’s “new approach” to regional diplomacy. Diplomacy may deteriorate, however, if UN nuclear inspectors find large traces of uranium at an alleged nuclear reactor that was destroyed by Israel in 2007. The results of the nuclear testing and the future state of affairs between the United Kingdom and Syria remain to be seen. | |
