EU- Russian Relations are looking “Nice"
Summary
EU and Russian leadership have begun a summit in Nice, France. The summit is structured to focus on warming relationships again between Russia and the European Union member states. Topics on the agenda include the global economy, Georgia, and the current missile shield dilemma. The hope is that friendly negotiations can resume between Russia and the EU after relations have turned cold due to the conflict in South Ossetia and the announcement by Russia of a missile system being deployed in Kaliningrad. The summit is taking place right before the Group of 20 summit which is being held in Washington, DC, following the summit in Nice.
Analysis
This meeting of Russian and EU leadership comes at a very pivotal moment in European and world history. The current relationships between many EU member states and Russia have become increasingly cold and worrisome. Russia’s military aggression in South Ossetia and the threats by Medvedev to install a missile base in Kaliningrad, which borders Poland, have caused a break down in negotiations and talks at a time when the global economy is entering into a recession.
This summit in Nice, France is a sign of renewed diplomacy and hopefully an indicator of future diplomatic negotiations between Russia and the EU so that another situation like Georgia does not occur again, specifically in Poland or any other ex-Soviet satellite. The EU has plans to negotiate with Russia to send United Nation monitors into South Ossetia. By recognizing and using an international institution and cooperating with the EU, Russia will demonstrate willingness to reciprocate the diplomatic efforts from the rest of the Europe in creating a safer and more beneficial region for not just the EU but also themselves. These talks should foster a better relationship between all states involved. Russia hopes to make head-way on their proposal for a collective European security agreement with the EU which, if successful, will unite the EU and Russia under one agreement and interconnect all the states security arrangements. This summit is a source for a combined EU-Russian platform before the larger Group of 20 summit which takes place in Washington, DC, immediately following the summit in Nice. All EU member states and Russia stand everything to gain by cooperating and negotiating in these summits. Hopefully a consensus can be reached and a platform but into action which will foster peace through progression in economic trade and a united stance on a security arrangement.
