Title
Cambodia and Thailand Begin Border Discussion
Summary
Cambodia and Thailand officials have agreed to an agenda to resolve a border dispute that erupted in deadly fighting last month. The dispute centers on a small piece of land around the ancient temple at Preah Vihear, but now includes other parts of the border. While Cambodia relies on a map drawn up a century ago by French cartographers which shows the disputed areas as its territory, Thailand argues that it never recognized this map. However, officials from both states have made it a priority to resolve the border issue and have agreed to determine the location that needs to be measured in the area around the Preah Vihear temple.
Analysis
Both Cambodia and Thailand have set aside their differences in hopes of settling a long-running border dispute between the two states, which not only demonstrates their cooperation with one another, but emphasizes a strong commitment to ease the tensions that has resulted from the border dispute. Moreover, the talks between the two states may reduce the likelihood of future conflicts and clashes. By agreeing to begin talks regarding the border dispute, both Cambodia and Thailand are illustrating the importance of diplomatic relations between states. Although Cambodia and Thailand may view each other as adversaries, talking is always better than not talking. Both states may be able to profit from these discussions and further their relationship for future agendas. Cambodia and Thailand are clearly demonstrating the objective of diplomacy by encouraging compromise regardless of the beliefs that they both hold regarding the disputed territory. As a result of this interaction, Cambodia and Thailand will develop habits of cooperation with one another that may benefit both states in the future.
