Taiwan President Meets China’s ARATS Chief
Summary
Ma Ying-jeou the President of Taiwan met with the head of China’s Associate for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), Chen Yunlin. During the meeting (which lasted just over five minutes), Yunlin also met with Chiang Pin-kung, head of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). Although tensions still exist between the states and the meeting caused hundreds of protestors to speak out, the two states made progress in their trade relationship. The agreements reached will improve financial and economic cooperation and show the promise of prosperity for both states.
Analysis
The trade talks between SEF and ARATS illustrate the acknowledgement for the need of interdependence between the states. The meeting solidified increased trade between China and Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. The leaders specifically mentioned “financial and economic cooperation.” Cooperation is essential to the positive relations and progress for the states.
This meeting of international leaders, while brief, included significant agreements that bring the states one step closer to more peaceful relations. The articles also cite this meeting as one of few “high-level exchanges” that have taken place since 1949. Each positive and productive interaction between leaders of these two states further opens lines of communication and encourages similar meetings in the future.
