Title
UN and African Leaders call for Political Peace
Summary
A summit meeting began on Friday between United Nations secretary general and seven African presidents. Although peace treaties have already been signed, violence still continues in the Congo’s mineral rich region, as it has for the past decade. Peacekeeping troops have not been effective in putting an end to the violence, and weak military and state institutions have been even less effective.
Analysis
Stabilizing the resource rich region of eastern Congo by creating a political tie between the Congo and surrounding countries could be a way to lead the Democratic Republic of the Congo to political stability through increased communication and effort of government authorities. A stabilization could also bring economic growth, as the Democratic Republic of the Congo could prosper from the minerals and resources within its country through trade. Creating trade relations between the DRC and other nations, especially those within the surrounding area could also promote peace and an effort of interdependence between nations. If the African leaders of these seven nations meeting on Friday can work a solution to bring about a political agreement to bring an end to violence in the region, then the DRC has a chance of benefiting greatly both economically and politically.
