Title |
US Strike on Pakistan Militants
| |
Summary |
The United States attacked Taliban militant targets in Pakistan. The attacks occurred in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The United States has not confirmed the attack and the number of causalities is still unclear. North Waziristan, the region where the attacks occurred, is considered to be “a haven for Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters who enter Afghanistan to fight US and NATO forces.” While the United States contends that they only act on clear intelligence and that this is critical to the Global War on Terror, Pakistan claims that these and similar strikes are “counter-productive."

Analysis |
These US attacks in Pakistan bring up the issue of sovereignty. United States’s Global War on Terror has placed the principle of and the respect for state sovereignty in a secondary position. The primacy of the United States’s security has trumped other issues and all action, including military force in Pakistan, has been employed. The internationally-held principal of sovereignty has been compromised and has not improved the relations between Pakistan and the United States. These tensions could possibly further strain relations and negatively affect the cooperation that is needed to fight terrorism.
Pakistan is not content with the current situation and believes that these strikes are “detrimental to America’s war on terror.” This difference in opinion may create difficulties for the United States if Pakistan’s discontent becomes refusal to cooperate with US efforts in Afghanistan. The United States is dependent on Pakistan because of its location and the influence and impact that it has in Afghanistan. The United States’s effort in Afghanistan would surely suffer if Pakistan does not lend it cooperation. The interconnected nature of international relations and the illusive nature of terrorism demands that the United States maintain positive and working relations with its allies in this fight. Therefore, Pakistan’s discontent must be seriously considered and effectively dealt with.
The United States has pursued its interest and sought its own security but because of the need for allies to be successive in this fight against terrorism, the United States has had to negotiate and be mindful of its allies’ interests. Pakistan is a position of influence because the United States is in need of its cooperation. Pakistan could possibly leverage this power and negotiate to pursue its own interests while still maintaining a working relationship with the United State. | |
