Analysis |
Croatia recent progress towards becoming a member of the European Union serves as a good example both of diplomacy and interdependence.
First, the desire of the Croatian government to join the European Union represents diplomacy. Diplomacy is the conducting of international relations through treaties, alliances, agreements, etc. In working to join the European Union Croatia is recognizing that conducting international relations through peaceful diplomatic means may be more successful than merely struggling to attain power in the international realm.
Similarly, this is also a great example of interdependence. With other states working together to build a strong more stable economic system for everyone, Croatia recognizes an opportunity to likewise strengthen its own economy. In entering into alliance through diplomatic means Croatia recognizes its own dependence on other nations for economic success. Likewise, the fact that the European Union is in fact working to incorporate Croatia shows that these members also recognize how world economies especially are linked. A rising tide lifts all ships.
