Title |
Iranian President Congradulates Obama
| |
Summary |
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran congratulated President-elect Barack Obama on his election win. No Iranian leader has done this since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Ahmadinejad said he hoped Obama would change US foreign policy to one of non-interventionism, especially with regards to the Middle East. He claims Americans are looking for him to restore America’s reputation in the world.

Analysis |
Ahmadinejad’s congratulations to President-elect Obama certainly says quite a lot. Most likely, Barack Obama’s claim that he will negotiate with Iran at the highest level without preconditions has made the Iranian government hopeful that Obama will be more willing to listen to what they have to say. This friendly welcoming to the world community could serve to lessen tension in what can be assumed as the inevitable meeting between the two leaders.
Lesser tensions could also mean more and more talks between Iran and the world community. If reasoned with instead of bullied, there is a chance Iran could be inclined to cooperate more with the West, bringing it into the world community and away from rogue nation status. This would increase interdependence between the world community and Iran and would serve to increase trade and lessen the possibility of violence between Iran and any of its enemies.
