Title
Taiwan and China New Treaty
Summary
Officials from China traveled to Taiwan over the last week in hopes of increasing ties between these two countries. This marked the highest level meeting between these two nations since Taiwan was established in 1949 by retreating democratic forces. The meeting met with protests in Taiwan but so far all has been peaceful. Many issues were talked over the course of the meetings. The two countries agreed on a trade of wildlife where china received a deer and Fermosa serow, while Taiwan received two pandas from China. However, more importantly the two countries agreed on new trade agreements dealing with food safety, mail services, flights, and direct shipping. They also agreed to meet regularly from now on in hopes of strengthening their relationships. This meeting will hopefully be one of many to come in bringing new found friendship between these two nations.
Analysis
China using a liberalist perspective should be very happy with these new trade agreements. They face many problems with controlling the military growth of Taiwan as a country. However, if Taiwan does not feel threatened then they should not need to increase their military strength as much. In addition, the more ties these two nations they have the less likely war will break out between them. China still claims Taiwan as a rogue part of their nation. By creating more ties between these two countries hopefully china will either accept Taiwan’s independence or Taiwan and China will unite again. This second scenario is very unlikely but as ties between these two nations increase there are many new possibilities. The trade agreements signed between China and Taiwan only helps China more easily control Taiwan.
Taiwan from a liberal perspective also benefits from these new trade agreements. Taiwan fears invasion from China. However, according to the liberal perspective the more ties there are between the two countries the less likely war will happen. Though these agreements are just baby steps they are ties nonetheless. In addition, the United States must look at this agreement as a good development in world politics. The United States is economically tied to both countries but more so mainland China. Yet, the United States has sworn to protect Taiwan from Chinese aggression. This would cause the United States to be in the middle of war where they would only lose. With new economic ties the threat of war is lessened and the United States can breathe a long sigh of relief.
