Title
Egypt Acts as a Mediator in Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations.
Summary
After negotiations with the Egyptian president, Israel’s president has “accepted the Arab peace initiative.” However, while there are disagreements which could prove to be stumbling blocks to peace, this is a major shift from the outright rejection of the Saudi initiative in 2002. Along with Arab recognition of Israel, there is a mutual pursuit for the release of prisoners on both sides. Egypt has acted as a mediator to these talks between Israel and Hamas and has brokered a “six-month truce.” However, peace is said to still be an unlikely prospect.
Analysis
Peace in the Middle East has been a focus of the international community for years. Future stability, peace, and prosperity is considered to be beneficial for the region and the global community. The ongoing conflict has brought suffering and limited the interaction between the states of the region. The hostile relations between Arab nations and Israel have impacted the entire global with regards to alliances, forces nations to partner or side with one or the other. Because these relations have a broad impact on the international community, all states have an invested interest in the progress of these negotiations and the possible solutions. This applies to relations regarding trade but also including the spread of democracy, human rights, and other ideals.
Egypt has assumed the role of mediator and has been able to facilitate advances with regards to the relations between Israel and Palestine. Although Egypt can be considered an outside actor, it has a large interest in the relations between Israel and Palestine. The conflict’s impacts on the region directly affect Egypt. Therefore, Egypt’s involvement is understandable. The interconnectedness of the region and the globe more broadly suggests that bilateral relationships are not limited in their impacts. They are far-reaching with regards to what states and actors they involve and affect but also in how many aspects such as trade are affected. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict does not merely affect those two states. And Egypt’s role in these negotiations is evidence of the broad impacts of such relations, whether they be improving, intensifying, or remaining stagnant.
