Analysis |
Somalia has turned to international institutions to help deal with this situation instead of trying to wage a full on war against their antagonizers. These attacks are no longer just affecting Somalia but now threaten the extensive trade routes between Asia and Europe.
Somalia is trying to use the persusaive powers of international organizations to control the pirates and hopefully the aid of other countries will be able to put a stop to the seizing of ships coming through the area, using stronger defense tactics rather then using violent attacks to put a stop to the situation. NATO frigates and destroyers are due in the area within the next few days to escort the World Food Programme ships carrying aid into Somalia, and provide a general deterrent. However, the chief spokesman for NATO said that these ships will be equipped with a full range of self-defense measures at their disposal incase they encounter strong hostility. Somalia has lacked a stable government since 1991 and often suffers from continual civil unrest, this in combination with the 30 million dollars worth of ransoms they have endured this year has left them unable to combat this problem alone. Since these pirates are attacking with unprecedented, and for no reason and no bias to which country or authority they attack, Somalia is depending on other nations and organizations to band together to intervene and deal with these pirates as diplomatically as the situation will allow. | |
