Indian and Pakistan Open Up Trade Relations
| |
Summary |
This Tuesday was declared the “Day of the Commerce Caravan” by the government of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), in response to a trade deal with India. The deal opened up a trade route along the 742km Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed land of Kashmir. This is the first trade agreement between India and Pakistan since 1947.
Analysis |
Both the Pakistani and Indian occupied sides of Kashmir are optimistic that the recent trade agreement will produce peaceful relations in the disputed territory. PoK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, who received the first trucks from India, had hopes for a positive future now that both countries were interdependent upon each other. Nazir Dar, an Indian trader hopes that the trade agreement will not only allow for trade with Pakistan, but the bridge that connects the two disputed sides will also act as a trade route for the potential market of the Middle East.
This trade agreement not only allows for Pakistan and India to form an interdependence upon each other for materials such as food and clothing, but it also allows for a peaceful sentiment to be established between the two states for future talks over Kashmir and other areas of contention. For the first time in a very long time, the Kashmiri people are seeing their two land occupiers working together as opposed to fighting. With trade continuing once a week, one can only hope the tides are turning towards more positive relations between the historic enemies.
