Title
Kosovo receives recognition boost
Summary
The governments of Montenegro and Macedonia have formally recognized Kosovo as independent following its secession from Serbia in February. Serbia and Bosnia-Hercegovina among ex-Yugoslav republics have yet to recognize Kosovo. Serbia, in response, expelled Montenegrin and Macedonian ambassadors. Roughly 50 countries have now recognized Kosovo’s independence, but, more than 140 have not.
Analysis
Montenegro and Macedonia’s recognition of Kosovo has hurt the regions stability. The Serbian expulsion of Montenegrin and Macedonian ambassadors expresses the decreased stability in the region. Furthermore, Serbian politicians have stated that Serbia should endorse sanctions against Montenegro as a form of punishment.
Montenegro and Macedonia’s recognition of Kosovo will make the two countries more appealing to become members of the EU and NATO. Becoming such members would help Montenegro and Macedonia, both economically and militarily.
