Title
Serbia expels Montenegro
Summary
Montenegro along with many other states recognized Kosovo’s independence sparking disapproval from Serbia causing them to expel Montenegro ambassador. Kosovo is considered by Serbs the cradle of their Orthodox Christian religion and statehood therefore very important to the Serbs. Several other states lead the way in recognizing Kosovo’s independence about 50 UN nations. Montenegro claims this not an act against Serbia but a chance to enter the European Union and NATO. Serbia did however win a diplomatic struggle Wednesday at the U.N. General Assembly, which approved a resolution to ask the International Court of Justice to provide a formal opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
Analysis
Montenegro and neighboring state Macedonia had been contemplating on recognizing Kosovo’s independence, this decision was not to go against Serbia or side with their adversary but their decision was to enhance relations with other countries. Both of these countries are trying to one day become members of the European Union and NATO. The union with these international organizations will only be beneficial for both parties as having allies is always good. Trade, foreign aid and military support are a few advantages these countries gain if they enter into international organizations. Kosovo being recognized as an independent state was following the trend of 50 U.N. member nations.
Serbia felt that their interdependence with Montenegro and all the other states that supported Kosovo’s independence had been compromised. In order to assert their disapproval they removed their ambassador from these various countries. Serbia and Montenegro’s interdependence has a responsibility with helping preserve peace and stability in the Balkans. The recognition of Kosovo jeopardized regional stability, amplifying fears that the move could reignite tensions in the Balkans. Serbia is worried that their relations with these states will suffer making them weaker than other states. Seeing that ending relations with several states is not a wise idea Serbia return its ambassadors to all states from which they were recalled for consultations.
