Title
NATO to help quell piracy in Somalian waters
Summary
On October 9, in a meeting in Hungary, the NATO military alliance pledged to send warships to combat pirates off of the coast of Somalia. The warships will also accompany ships with aid to the flooded country. To further quell piracy, the UN released a resolution allowing force to be used against the pirates.
To put a dollar value on this issue, the BBC reported that piracy so far this year has “cost up to $30 million in ransoms"
Analysis
While there is use of force present in this issue, it appears that the liberal perspective may be applied. Since the UN and NATO does not tangibly gain from their decisions and resolutions, the international organizations clearly negotiated on behalf of a war-torn country that has not had a functioning central government in over 17 years. Moreover, countries have already placed warships on the coast of Somalia, emphasizing the fact that Somalia needs the help of other nations --- and those nations are willing to help Somalia. Moreover, the other nations gain in that waterways off the coast of Somalia will be safe. Therefore, there are absolute gains present. There is a huge level of interdependence and reciprocity present in this crisis, especially considering that Somalia may never be able to return any favors bestowed on it at this time, militarily or politically speaking.
