Title
United States Lifts Stay on Nuclear Trade with India
Summary
India has been looking for ways to feed its energy crisis any way it can. It recently found success when the United States lifted the ban on the sale of nuclear technology and fuel to India. This deal comes as a reversal of United States foreign policy in regards to nuclear power which is usually to try and limit its spread. However, this deal is expected to bring large amounts of revenue to American companies. In addition, this was lobbied hard by American defense companies in hopes to build closer ties to India so they can sell their goods to India. Some pro-nuclear proliferation groups such as the Arms Control Association deeply resented this bill. This group called this deal a, “A non-proliferation disaster of historic proportions that will produce harm for decades to come.” Two other countries also signed deals with India this week to supply nuclear fuel and technology and these two countries were France and Russia.
Analysis
India profits greatly from the deals it recently signed with France, Russia, and especially the United States. India faces an energy crisis of epic proportion. This crisis must be overcome before India is able to emerge as a power house on the Asian continent. It needs power for its economy to grow and help improve the standard of living for its citizens, many of whom live on less than one dollar a day. India also benefits from this deal because it allows it access to nuclear technology and fuel to improve its other uses for nuclear technology such as nuclear weapons. Another benefit to this deal for India is it helps increase ties with France, Russia, and the U.S. All three of these nations are strong economic powerhouses that would be able to help India get some of the higher level imports it needs. An example of this is military weapons which India needs can be supplied from any of the three major powers it just signed deals with.
The United States also profits greatly from this new trade agreement. They will make large amounts of money selling their fuel and technology which will help their ailing economy. In addition, they will make close ties to another country in Asia rather than China and this will help to create bipolarity in Asia. Another plus is by increasing its economic ties now it will be able to sell more goods and services to them as they expand. In addition, by building up interconnectedness now tensions in the future are much less unlikely. What is true for America is also true for France and Russia with their respective benefits in this new agreement.
