Title
Piracy in Somalia
Summary
Somali pirates have hijacked a cargo ship holding battle tanks and hostages for a ransom of 20 million dollars. The Somali government has reached out to foreign powers to use force against the piratesm, after which the pirates declared they would be ready to battle any commando-style rescue attempt. The US Navy did not disclose any information or any plan to use force, but they did warn against harming the 20 crew members or trying to unload the ship’s cargo of 33 Soviet-designed T-72 tanks and other weapons. The pirates deny any connections with terrorism but only a want the ransom money. The U.N. has proposed a resolution that calls on all countries with any stake in maritime safety to send ships and aircrafts to fight piracy off Somalia. These pirates are known to hold out and usually receive the ransom they demand. Countries from Russia, France, to the United States all have sent help to Somalia in an attempt to end piracy, none have yet to succeed.
Analysis
Somalia’s security will affect the trade of many other countries within that regions water making it important to protect the security of Somalia. The people of eastern Africa’s trade, state stability and economy are threatened by the constant piracy attacks. With the constant fear of being attacked trade has become more expensive and less frequent.
The high seas are a common ground where safe trade should take place between many different countries. States are all dependent upon the safety of the seas, so when they are in danger all the states that have or will ever trade across those seas are in jeopardy. The price of oil and other goods threaten to rise with the increased risk of hijackings in the seas, greatly affecting Europe and America’s trade with the Middle East. Trade to countries surrounding Somalia will be greatly strained making piracy not only a problem for Somalia but for any traders that are located near their coast. The oil Somalia and the Middle East possess make helping rid Somalia of their pirates a beneficial venture for the United States as well as other countries by protecting their investments. By providing aid to Somalia the United States will keep strong ties with them in hopes for future trade/oil and protect their current oil and other investments in the Middle East. The dependency the United States has in the Middle East makes any security dilemma involving their trade a top priority for the US to fix.
If piracy continues off the coast of Somalia with success then it may give hope for pirates to venture to other seas affecting safe sea trade for everyone. In the respect that it may affect the interdependence and safe trade between many countries; this piracy can become a major problem. As of now the region surrounding Somalia is considered some of the most dangerous maritime region. The UN must intervene as it will affect the trade of many, ruining what they had hoped for in the Atlantic Charter “a peace should enable all men to traverse the high seas and oceans without hindrance.”
