France and India Sign Nuclear Trade Deal

India has recently concluded negotiations on a deal with France to supply the country with nuclear power plants. India is interested in the third-generation European Pressurized Reactors, which the French power giant Areva to supply two of them along with nuclear fuel. India originally had a nuclear power deal with the US, leading critics to state it put too much of India’s future in American hands. The French deal, and a third deal with Russia, defeats this claim. India plans to get materials from a number of suppliers except for Australia, which refuses to sell the growing country Uranium.

The nuclear power deals with first the United States, then Russia, and now France showcase India’s coming into the modern world; both in terms of infrastructure and interdependence on other states. Lacking the capabilities to provide themselves with nuclear power, India chose to become dependent on trade with foreign states to fulfill their nuclear needs. The benefits of India’s recent nuclear deals help all those involved as well. India receives the obvious benefit of being capable of nuclear electricity, while France receives a substantial payment for their trouble. It also further stabilizes any relations between France and India. The same principles hold true for their respective deals with the US and Russia, stabilizing their relationships with India, and perhaps creating a future arbiter between the two states as their relations become increasingly tense.
The nuclear deal serves to stabilize the rest of the world as well. Due to India having major trade deals with three major world players, they are brought into the web of interdependence that now covers the industrialized world. Being that India possesses nuclear weaponry, anything that serves as a deterrent from any sort of action against the world is a positive. Assuming these agreements go as planned, it will lead to India making further deals with these nations and others, furthering through trade India’s interdependence on the rest of the world and making any major wars less and less likely.
