Title
Russia Warns Ukraine Over Arms Trade
Summary
Russia has expressed outrage over reports that Ukraine had supplied Georgia with military technology and technicians before the start of the brief Russian-Georgian war in early August. Russia believes Ukrainian involvement in the conflict is a “crime” which would “pit Russian and Ukrainian peoples against each other.” Ukraine denies these allegations, firmly believing that the report would prove to be unfounded.
Analysis
With the perceived threat posed to its security and power within the region by the United States’ presence, Russia has become even more uneasy with the notion that Ukraine may have supplied arms and personnel which may have been used in combat against Russian troops. If these allegations are confirmed, Russia has stated that it would “build its relations accordingly with those who allowed this to happen.” This statement has left Ukraine anxious about its own security, and has thus downplayed the accusations to avoid any further escalation in tension.
The allegations dealt by Russia emphasize the tension held between the two countries over the past few years. Russia has expressed its discontentment with Ukraine’s possible membership in NATO, warning that its involvement within the organization would be counterproductive in providing international security. In the past, NATO has attempted to reassure the ex-Soviet state that its eastward expansion is not a threat to its security, although its role in the post Cold War world is still largely undefined. Russia fears NATO absorption of Ukraine and Georgia will cause it to be geopolitically encircled, thus upsetting its power and influence over former Soviet satellite states. Russia has continued to put pressure on Ukraine over its possible NATO membership and remains skeptical of NATO’s intentions.
