Statistics for Engineers and Scientists

Statistics for Engineers and Scientists (STAT4073)

[World photograph]
The purpose of this course is to prepare students for further study and job preparation in the fields of Engineering and Sciences by teaching statistics and probability skills. The course content includes (but is not limited to) descriptive statistics, probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, regression, factorial experiments, and statistical quality control.

Objectives

By the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to
  • Calculate descriptive statistics (centers and spreads) for data and specify what the numbers mean.
  • Calculate means, variances, and cumulative distribution functions for a given probability mass (or density) function
  • Calculate medians and percentiles for a given probability mass (or density) function
  • Calculate confidence intervals for the mean
  • Calculate p-values for null hypotheses
  • Know the assumptions behind the tests of significance
  • Be able to test when these assumptions are not met
  • Calculate mesures of relation between two or more variables
  • Design experiments to balance the needs of a researcher and of a statistician
