Procedure Practice
This web page gives you practice in identifying the correct statistical procedure, given the stated hypothesis.
Purpose
Welcome to the page that helps you determine the important characteristics of the research hypothesis. In practicing here, you will gain experience in:
- parsing the hypothesis for important details
- determine the unit of measurement
- determine the correct parametric test given the hypothesis
The Problem
Think about the hypothesis. Ask the important questions. What is the unit of measurement? What is being measured on each unit? Are we comparing two variables? Are we comparing means? proportions? Answer these questions. Get to know the hypothesis.
Now that you have your answer, click on the button corresponding to your choice to see if it is the correct answer. Here is the research hypothesis.
HR : The students in my Statistics classes tend to be female, not male.
The unit of measurement is the student. Each student is measured as either male or female. There is just one population. Thus, this is a one-sample proportions test (Binomial test). This hypothesis is equivalent to
pF > 0.500
