Module 2: Set Theory
Module Objectives
By the end of this module, the student will
- define sets using roster and set-builder notation
- use Venn diagrams to represent sets and set relationships
- define and use several set operations, including c, ∩, ∪, Δ, and ∖
- use DeMorgan’s laws (for sets)
Readings
These are the assigned reading for this module:
- Hawkes Learning Systems: Chapter 2
Chapter Assignment (ChA)
Hawkes Learning Systems is excellent for testing (and training) you on small, easily determined, problems. You will always know the section to focus on when you do Hawkes. This is its major strength (everyone can succeed here) and its main weakness (it does not test higher-order learning). To complement its weakness, I developed these chapter assignments.
Online Assignment
To obtain any points for the chapter, you need to pass the Certify part.

Here is a video exploring the Hawkes dashboard and their three-step process.
Slide Decks (SlD)
These are the slide decks that I will be going through during class. I expect you to download these before class and be familiar with them.
- §2.1: Set Notation: Starting to understand sets
- §2.2: Subsets and Venn Diagrams: Seeing sets
- §2.3: Operations with Sets: Working with sets
- §2.4: Applications: Survey analysis
By the way: It is extremely important that you go through the slide decks before class. Knowing what will be discussed helps you better learn the material and how it fits into everything you already know. Make no mistake about it: This is a college-level course. This means you have college-level expectations on you.
